I
am placed at Whitlehills Elementary School in East Lansing, it is in a nice
subdivision right off Lake Lansing Road.
I go in on Tuesday’s from 11:00 to 12:30 and on Wednesday’s from 1:25 to
3:45. I am in a 6th grade
classroom, there are three different teachers for this grade, and my mentor
teacher is the math teacher. Last semester
was hard because I had to switch to work with other teachers but I am excited
to spend the most time with my class and mentor teacher this semester. The classes are about 25 students so I have
gotten to know most of them quite well.
The students switch for science, math, and
social studies but all homeroom teachers do literature lessons. I have seen quite a few of the math lessons
but have not actually seen a test, so I am hoping to see how the students do
with taking these. My teacher has been
working mainly in 5th and 6th grade for a long time and
has had many students from MSU in her class so it is nice that she has
experience with mentoring. I am hoping
to work closer with her this semester because of the subject focus. My classroom has tables and chairs but no
desks, we arrange the tables every so often but they are mainly in rows of 5
with a few bigger group tables. The
seating chart changes frequently and is adjusted to sit students who work well
next to each other by one and other but also try to take friendships into
consideration.
