Placement Description

My placement is at Wilkshire Elementary in the Haslett Public School District. I am in a classroom of 23 Kindergarteners. They are an energetic group of children who are eager to learn! I participate in the classroom on Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 1-3. When I arrive at 1:00 the children are coming in from recess. They then have a 15 minute period of yoga, to help them rest and calm down before they begin their academic afternoon. After yoga, the children engage in various literacy activities through centers. My mentor teacher is very supportive in accommodating the math needs for this semester, and encourages me to pull a student or a small group of students to participate in a math activity from one of the Math Center Bins each time I am in the classroom. I am very fortunate to have an accommodating and helpful mentor teacher!

Often times I will float around the room aiding the children and supporting their learning during the centers. Other times my mentor teacher asks me to pull students in the hall to conduct assessments, both formal and informal. I think both of these experiences are very helpful to my teacher training, as teachers conduct both of these tasks almost everyday. On occasion I will prep activities, make copies, etc., but often times I am in the classroom participating with the children! I am excited to support the children as they learn even more the second half of the school year!
