Lauren Ghelfi-Placement

I am at Wilcox Elementary School in Holt. I am in a second grade classroom of about 23 students. I would say that the school is a good sized school. Most of the rooms have about the same amount of students. One of the first things the students do when they get into the school is line up outside their classrooms and wait until their teacher has let them in. In my classroom specifically, the students put their backpacks away, make their lunch choices, and then sit down at their desks and begin their morning work. During their morning work the announcements are read and the students stand for the Pledge of Allegiance and the "Wilcox Student Pledge." During the time that I am at my placement the students will finish their morning work and the teacher will grade it, they will work on the carpet while the teacher uses the smart board, have center time, take a spelling test, have snack time, work more at centers, do in class math work, work on their writing, and then they are off to lunch.
While we are at centers there are 5 groups. 1 group works on "word work" with me. Here we either play word games, practice writing sentences, or read books as a group. Another group works with the teacher on similar things as their "word work" but she is much more focused on assessing the students. The other 3 groups are either working on their unfinished writing assignments, reading to someone, or reading quietly to themselves.
I have really only been in the classroom on Friday mornings. However, one of the afternoons I spent there the students came back from lunch and recess and went to the computer lab. Here they worked individually on their own computers on different units for language arts. After computer lab they go to kinetics and are typically done for the day.
