Taylor Cummings--Placement

I am placed in a kindergarten classroom at Pleasant View Elementary.  It is located in Lansing and it is a performing arts magnet school, which means all of their special classes are related to the performing arts (theater, dance, art, etc).  Students have to apply to be in this school, but usually everyone gets accepted. There are 22 students in my classroom and there is a broad range of academic abilities.  The majority of the students in my classroom are African American, with the rest being Caucasian.  There are two students in my classroom that have IEP's, yet they only receive the bare minimum of their designated services listed in the IEP.  Throughout the day, there is a speech pathologist and a literacy helper that come into the classroom and work one-on-one with different students.  My classroom focuses a lot of their day on literacy (reading and writing) and mathematics.  My MT alternates months with teaching science and social studies, and the students usually learn these for an hour a few times a week in the afternoon.  Overall, the students in my classroom have learned to become each other's school family and I am amazed to see how well everyone gets along.
