Kaitlyn Flint Field Placement
For my placement, I am at Wilkshire Early Chilhood Center in a kindergarten classroom. There are 26 students in my classroom, all with a range of abilities. I have 2 students with special needs and 1 that needs specific accommodations because of a medical condition. I go to my placement on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1-3pm. This is their primary literacy time. On Mondays, the neighboring classroom and my classroom switch students up for literacy and each teacher will teach their specific lesson, and then the students will switch classrooms. This is called "switcharoo" and is split by all boys and all girls. On Wednesdays, the students stay in their own classroom for literacy. Literacy includes lessons by the smart board as well as writing. The students in my classroom produce a lot of writing. Last semester I went in the mornings and saw their morning routines and lessons, so I am excited to see how their afternoons go. This is my mentor teacher's last year teaching, as she will retire after this year. I feel very fortunate to have been placed with someone with so much experience. She is very personable and friendly with the students and all of the students have a lot of respect for both her and me. My mentor teacher is very supportive of me everyday and also when I teach my lessons.
