I am placed at Wilcox Elementary in Holt, MI. Overall the school is very focused on being respectful, responsible, and being focused. The school is a great atmosphere and the teachers and principal clearly show how interested they are in the students needs. I am in a second grade class. There are 24 students in my classroom one of which is Autistic, and two have ADHD. On the days I go in, the students start of with morning work which consists of math then they are to read silently once they have finished their morning work. The students always have centers every morning which involve reading to self, reading to others, word work, work on writing and meet with teacher. I conduct the word work center where we do activities that further push what the students have learned and allows them to better grasp the concept or area of learning.
The majority of students are at a high level for their grade. Some students need one-on-one time with the teacher while others can do it on their own without any problems. I have noticed that if I constantly ask the one students who has ADHD to keep working and praise him by saying, "awesome job, let's keep working!" he will continue to finish his work rather than not do any of it. Although, I know this is not ideal for my mentor teacher if I were not in the classroom. My class focuses the majority of their day on literacy and math. Overall, it has been a wonderful experience to have had the chance to observe and work with these students thus far. I am looking forward to continue to work with them the rest of this semester.
