My Math Teaching

I want my mathematics instruction to be different from what I experienced in school. I found math boring and could never relate it to my everyday life. I want my students to have a different opinion of math than I did. Doing one hundred simple additions would be extremely boring for me to do, and would be even worse for my younger students. I am hoping to create fun tasks that require my students to use all of their math knowledge to help them solve it. I also want the tasks to be hands on and relate it to their lives. I would want to arrange my students in groups for group work. I think it is more beneficial for students to work together because they discuss different ways to solve problems. Even in our class today, I have learned more ways to draw fractions than I ever thought was possible. In the future, I want my students to appreciate math and be able to apply math concepts to one another and fully understand them.

  1. These are good - and honest - sentiments. But in looking ahead to next year, make sure that you start to think about specific ways to achieve this...What do you mean when you say "fun tasks"? And how might you go about creating them? You want the tasks to relate to their lives...how might you actually do this? What might this mean for your work as a teacher next year?
