As a teacher I plan to have an interactive class. I plan to have the students engage in activities that help them explore and discover math, rather than just teach them a trick or skill and have them practice it a hundred times. I plan to make sure that my activities have a specific purpose for the students learning. I feel that worksheets can have a place in the classroom, but I will use them only when necessary. I think that they can give me insight into what the students already know or how they are thinking about math, if the questions are designed properly. Therefore, if I use worksheets from a book, or unit, I will revise it so that I am not giving the students busy work.
My classroom will be colorful and I plan to have a number line visible for the students. I think it is important to refer to the number line often, so that the students know that it is there and refer to it when they need help. I also think that a it is helpful if I have manipulatives available at all times for the students. I want my students to each have a number line on their desks so they are also able to refer to it. My goal is to help the student discover mathematics for themselves.
I like the fact that you are being very specific in terms of what you will actually see in your classroom. Think about what you see yourself doing...How will you interact with students? What types of things will you be saying to them? How will you interact with students and the number line?
