This is the chapter review my class went over today. It was supposed to be homework from yesterday and due to go over today. There were at least 10 students who did not have this done/did not have it at school so they grabbed an extra copy to fill out as we went over it as a class. For the first question my MT showed the class two ways to solve it, I liked the idea of this because it made me think of what we have been doing in class just she did not ask the students to show her the ways. She showed the two ways she had taught but noted there were other ways to solve as well. In general I do not appreciate the math task, they are tedious worksheets everyday, they are never taken to a higher level like we have talked about in class. There are many simple ways that these task could have been brought to a higher level there are about 5 problems on here just repeated with different numbers filled in. A simple way to test this at a higher level would be for the students to write their own percentage problem, we have gone over discount problems and tip problems, it would be easy to have them write their own.
My questions are why do we always do worksheets? Why cant we mix this up ever?
I am also a little dismayed by the fact that if you don’t have it done you just get the answers filled in for you and that the students almost always get to use this on the test. The only thing different about the test is the numbers are changed, the questions are exactly the same. This does not give the students any reason to study at all! I guess I can see that it will motivate them to take good notes as we follow along with the class but I still do not see that happening.
The grading rubric states that to get full points the answer must be correct as well as work shown to get that answer. My students never have to turn in homework assignments with work shown, many do work in their head or on scrap paper, or on dry erase boards, they cannot find this work if their life depended on it. So why are they now expected to do this?
I think that at the 6th grade level and after teacher for quite some time it is hard to stray from the set out book curriculum. I think that maybe this teacher has learned this is what works and this is what she will stick to, maybe she has tried other options and it just has not worked. I feel that at a 6th grade level if they are not getting higher level tasks then they probably did not in the past and I doubt it is going to be happening in their future, this is a time of large group and I do believe something different would be helpful to keeping them motivated!
I feel at the 6th grade level students should be taking notes and they should be studying for math tests. I do not see how letting them have the answers right next to them to very similar problems will help them actually learn this. Students need to study and to practice so that they actually retain the information. I do not believe that taking the test with the chapter review shows the true grade of the student and their work. I did say that I can see it being helpful to teach them to take good notes but they do not do this and they should be doing this in class when they learn the lesson and maybe open note would be helpful but they are not expected to take notes then so they do not see the need to when we go over it.
I did not know this was the rubric until today I saw it at the end of her teacher example of the test. I am quite surprised by this, I absolutely think it is important for these students to be showing work and I agree with the rubric completely but not sure it works in this classroom. I struggle every week to find a homework where the student has shown work so that I can evaluate them and many times I do not succeed. If this is a requirement then I think something needs to change in the classroom, students should have to turn in all work with their homework, have it labeled and be able to follow it. This would help them overall to see where they make mistakes because I struggle to find their mistake when they just have the wrong answer.
This is a very thoughtful analysis...Be sure to ask specific questions about the artifact you are observing, and also be sure to suggest some ways to begin to answer these questions...
